Google has took a step farther to discourage link exchange. In Google’s webmasters tools, it states that do not do link exchanges excessively. It will only make Google penalize you.
Building the right neighbourhood
In order to have your website on higher SERP, you need to find the right link exchange partners. Google goes the extra mile to analyze your link partners’ links too. This can be good, but it can be bad also.
Bad point 1 : Wrong neighbour.
What will happen if your link partner has a high PR and it links up to a different market from yours? Basically, Google can takes this as high vote, and puts you on the wrong SERP.
Bad point 2 : Banning you
What if, one of your link partners is linking with one of the black hat SEO website? That’s a very bad thing that can happen to you. Slowly, you will see your standing in SERP drops and eventually goes out of your sight! Beware and check your link partners now and then.
