Page Rank Explained.
Are you bothered by the recent PageRank update?
If you are interested to make money online or earn money blogging, I believe you feel that Search Engine Optimization is the best way to make money. Search engine optimization is a big technique that cannot be explain in a single post so I am going to talk about the heart of the biggest search engine, PageRank.
Why Google?
Google, having at least of over 50% of searches monthly, is the most frequent used search engine online. Even Yahoo! and Ask have their searches added together, they are only made up of the 30% of the total searches.
What is PageRank?
PageRank is known as the heart of all Google’s technology. It is described as “The heart of our software is PageRank™, a system for ranking web pages developed by our founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University.” It is a software that Larry Page developed when he is doing a PhD research. This software research eventually become the heart of all Google’s technology. Of course, having a low PageRank doesn’t mean you cannot be on top of the SERPs in Google. But it’s an indication on how well your website is doing. There are even people saying there are no weightage for high PageRank. However, as for myself, I will believe what the Google’s website says. PageRank is the heart of Google. This post will discuss in depth how PageRank works.
NB: Do take note that PageRank technology is not released to the public except the first version. But there is no doubt PageRank still evolves from that first version, with tweaks that we will welcome them.
How PageRank works?
PageRank works by counting votes from a website to another website. Let’s say website A has a hyper link to website B, it is known as website A has voted for website B. It’s not difficult right? But this is just the simple overview of PageRank. You might be thinking as long as you get as many hyper links in different websites, you will have high PageRank. But that’s not the case. In the following, I will explain in details how PageRank works.
Votes of PageRank
PageRank works by counting votes from a website to another website. But how they actually count the weightage? Does all votes has the same weightage? The answer is No. Not all votes have the same value. And this is how they count the value of each vote.
1) The current PageRank of the casting vote website. Only 85% of the PageRank are used
2) The numbers of hyper links on the casting vote website.
So if you have a website of PageRank 2 with 10 hyper links in it casting a vote to your website, you will have
(85% x 2 PageRank)/10 hyper links = 0.17 value for that hyper link.
However, if you have a PageRank 10 with 100 hyper links, you will have
(85% x 10 PageRank)/100 hyper links = 0.085 value for that hyper link.
This example clearly shows that having votes from high PageRank doesn’t means it’s good too.
Things to take note in PageRank
- Google understands that webmasters cannot control how incoming links goes, but they definitely control how links go out. Be very careful when you do exchange with partners. Do a search on Google with the partners URL and make sure it’s not banned from Google. Or you will be banned along with your partners
- Different pages has different PageRank. For example, http://yourwebsite/Tools and http://yourwebsite/Guides have different PageRank. And PageRank are also counted with internal hyper links. Which means webpages from the same domain can cast votes on each other.
- Having 2 votes from the same webpage doesn’t mean you can have more value. As this doesn’t follows the logic of voting, this concept can be ignored
- Casting votes to other website will not reduce your PageRank. It will only increase others’ PageRank. Doesn’t mean linking up to others will give up 85% of your PageRank
- Each PageRank Update will happen every 3 months. There is another minor update called the Google Dance which will update the SERPs that happens every month.
Weaknesses of PageRank
- It is reported that if you have a website that is redirecting to a full PageRank 10 website, in the next Google PageRank Update, the website with redirecting, will receive PageRank 10 too.
- A recurring update needs to be updated if 2 websites are linked together. Which means, website A links to website B and website B links to website A. When website A is calculating its PageRank, website B is still having the old PageRank, and when website B is calculating its PageRank, website A doesn’t has the accurate PageRank. The only way to solve this is to recurring the update. This is why PageRank updates can take 3 months.
- PageRank is based on a scale (and this scale is not released) of 0 to 10. When your PageRank drops, it doesn’t mean you’re losing hyper links. It just means that there are other websites pushing your website down to the lower scale. Let’s say there is 100 websites, then the lowest 10 will be PageRank 1 and the highest 10 will be PageRank 10. If we have 1000 websites, the lowest 100 will be PageRank 1 and the highest 100 will be PageRank 10.
From this, I hope you can understand better how this “heart” of Google works and gain higher PageRank. Sorry for the long post but I believe this is worth the reading
